8.14.2006 Laser Radial Youth World Championships. Marina Del Rey, CA   Two Virgin Islands Girls place in the top 20 at theOver 180 sailors competed for rankings in the Laser Radial World Championships last week in Marina Del Rey, Ca….two of the competitors were the VI’s very own Mauymi Roller (STJ) and Sydney Jones (STX).  Mauymi Roller coming off of her 6th place out of 12 at the CAC Games in Cartegena, Columbia and Sydney Jones flying directly to LA from Houston, TX, where she placed 23rd out of 69 in the US Sailing Single Handed Jr. Women’s Championships. 

After 7 days of racing that saw winds from 3-18 knots and seas from 2-4 feet, the two friends from the VI found themselves sailing together for top 20 finishes.   With over 12 countries vying for the championship and over 39 women sailing in this event, the VI girls had 5 top ten finishes between them.     For the final races the two girls finished side by side for three of the four races giving Mauymi the leg up to finish 14th overall while Sydney finished 19th overall.  This is the first time in the History of Virgin Islands Sailing to have two Women in the top 20 in a World Championship Event. Together the girls out-sailed several world ranked Olympic Class Laser Radial sailors and they have not even reached their 17th birthday.  The Virgin Islands can look forward to many more top 20 performances as these girls continue their sailing careers.

 

7.30.06  2006 Central America Caribbean Games, Cartegena, Columbia-Cy Thompson is the sole gold medalist for the Virgin Islands, winning the Singe-Handed Sailing event in the Laser.  Mayumi Roller took home a 6th place (out of 12) in the Laser Radial Class.

7.22.2006 2006 ISAF Volvo Youth  World Championships, Weymouth, England- Cy Thompson  qualified to represent the US Virgin Islands in the Laser Class at the World Championships.  Cy had two top ten finishes which landed him 14th overall.  Sydney Jones sailed in the highly competitive Laser Radial Class with a top finish of 20th scoring 35th overall.
